Pingyao film show insists on small scale, but broad horizons

The 3rd Pingyao International Film Festival held in Pingyao county on Oct 10-19 screened 54 films from 27 countries and regions, according to the organizers.

The annual film event has boosted the local film and television industry since it was launched in 2017, they said. 

From 2017 to 2018, Pingyao's local box office growth soared 550 percent, which also led to the development of the entire film industry and cultural industry in Shanxi province.

The increasing audiences and film industry insiders and professionals have in turn increasingly influenced the Pingyao International Film Festival. According to the festival's initiator and filmmaker, Jia Zhangke, quite a few people have shown great interest in two major film industrial projects during the festival. 

Since its launch, Pingyao International Film Festival has always been organized on a small scale but with broad horizons, according to Jia. 

The small scale means that the final number of selected films screening during the festival is small, so that audiences can have more in-depth exchanges with the film and filmmakers. 

With its broad horizon, however, the festival chooses films from different countries and regions -- mainly non-Western films so as to strengthen the dialogue between non-Western and Western films.
