Pingyao sees visitor surge over May Day holidays

The Ancient City of Pingyao in Shanxi province in northern China, again proved its popularity as a UNESCO World Heritage Site during the May Day holidays on May 1-4.

It received 362,200 visitors from home and abroad in the first three days of the holiday, officials reported. 

In particular, the second day saw 138,000 tourists visit the ancient city, for year-on-year growth of 4.86 percent. 

Locals say Pingyao, whose pace of life gentle is and relaxed, has a long history and the ancient city is very beautiful.

The music and architecture there have distinctive local characteristics.

Local people are simple and friendly, according to a visitor from the Netherlands.
