Pingyao traditional New Year celebration approaches

Pingyao county's big annual event – the Pingyao Chinese New Year which features local celebrations of the traditional Spring Festival – will be held from Jan 28 to Feb 20, according to a news conference in Taiyuan on Jan 18.

This year's event, with a theme entitled "open Pingyao welcomes you", will consist of nine main events including folk customs, lantern shows, opera performances as well as an online gala.

Initiated in 2006, the Pingyao Chinese New Year has been held for 13 consecutive years and is attracting increasing numbers of travelers to the city. The number of visitors to the Ancient City of Pingyao during the Spring Festival holiday rose to 1.38 million in 2018 from 100,000 in 2006.
