Cultural relic experts visit Pingyao

Shanxi Culture Relics Bureau organized a group of experts in the field of relic protection and research to check and survey a protection project for shagexiren, a Pingyao traditional craft, on Dec 10.

Shagexiren is a traditional art popular in Pingyao county and combines sculptures, paper-made crafts, opera, stage art, colors and modeling. Being a unique work of local art, it fully showcases the extraordinary skills of ancient craftspeople and provides materials for surveying Chinese traditional opera and folk arts.

Experts from institutions, including the Palace Museum, Nanjing Museum and Hubei Provincial Museum viewed shagexiren collected in Pingyao Qingxu Taoist Temple and learned of the progress in protecting and renovating cultural relics, putting forward related suggestions to ensure that cultural heritage can be handed down and preserved for future generations.

Many of the experts expressed their hopes that Pingyao county will form a special group for restoring, protecting and researching shagexiren, and preserve it based on the restoration experience of professional institutions and craftspeople in this field.
