Shanxi passes pollution assessment

North China’s Shanxi province has passed the assessment on main pollutant emission goals for 2014, according to an announcement published on July 22 by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

In the past year, Shanxi has discharged 441,300 tons chemical oxygen demand in total, 4.33 percent less than 2013. Its ammonia nitrogen emissions fell 3.01 percent from 55,300 tons in 2013 to 53,700 tons in 2014, while the emissions of sulfur dioxide was 1.21 million tons in 2014, 3.76 percent less than 2013. The emissions of nitrogen oxide, also a key pollutant, fell by 7.60 percent from 2013 to 1.07 million tons.

The assessment report by the Ministry of Environmental Protection covered the emission reductions performance of the country’s 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps as well as eight central state-owned enterprises.
