A bus between Pingyao and Mount Wutai has started operations, largely shortening the travel time, to the convenience of travelers. Before, travelers between the two tourist spots had to stop by the transfer station at Taiyuan or Xinzhou, in North China's Shanxi province.
Mount Wutai is a famous Buddhist mountain, located in Xinzhou city, and Pingyao county is a well preserved ancient town – a noted World Cultural Heritage location. Based on a tourist survey, the provincial government found that many travelers in Shanxi wanted a link between the two tourist spots. "The previous travel path between the two places was time consuming and travelers used up much of their energy on the road, doing harm to their travel experience," a staff member in the ticket office of the bus company, Mr. Li, said.
The bus route travels across Mount Wutai-Baode expressway and Datong-Yuncheng expressway, passing by many other tourist spots along the way. The line includes 47 large-sized coaches, which start operating at 8:30 am each day. A single journey, 359 kilometers in length, takes 4.5 hours.
The route completes the coverage of high-speed, non-stop transportation among the three World Cultural Heritage sites within Shanxi province: Mount Wutai, Datong city, and Pingyao county.
Mount Wutai Coach Station sits near Puhua Temple in Wutai county. It runs coach services to Beijing, Shijiazhuang, Dingzhou, Hohhot, Datong, Taiyuan and other cities. The largest volume of passengers per day is about 2,000. It is a key tourism service in Mount Wutai's scenic spot.
