Updated:2013-11-01 16:13By Zhou Yuanyuan ( chinadaily.com.cn)
Pingyao county has a new museum of traditional colored-lanterns, a first for it and even for the nearby city of Jinzhong, Shanxi province, after years of preparation by the Pingyao Art Research Institute.
The colored lantern is a form of Chinese art with strong national characteristics that integrates abstract forms, sculpture, painting, decoration, and lighting, with each one representing the tradition of colored drawing, Chinese opera, and paper cuts as well as modern sound and light. They have great ornamental and artistic value.
The museum has collected some master works of illumination from various periods, including as far back as the Warring States (475-221 BC), the Qin and Han dynasties, and Ming and Qing dynasties, on up to modern times.
