Pingyao launches six ecological campaigns to promote green development

The local Pingyao government has launched six ecological campaigns in order to facilitate the transformation of the economic development model based on the consumption of energy and resources in Pingyao county, North China’s Shanxi province.

The six campaigns aim to reduce emissions, reduce air pollution, clean up water, clean the county, improve the quality of the ecological environment and establish model towns in order to continuously improve the quality of the ecological environment, steadily improve the urban function of the county and greatly improve Pingyao’s livability by 2015.

The emission reduction campaign will focus on pollution treatment and energy consumption reduction by raising the access threshold of relevant industries and upgrading the equipment and technologies of existing companies to better treat discharged pollutants so as to meet binding emission reduction targets by 2015.

The air cleaning campaign aims for all-round improvement of air quality in urban areas by tackling head on pollution caused by coal burning, automobile exhaust, flowing dust and oil gasification and leakage in gas stations as well as promoting the use of clean energy.

The water cleaning campaign will stress pollution prevention and treatment in major watersheds and adopt a comprehensive approach to improve the overall water environment and water quality in the county.

The county cleaning campaign aims to provide better garbage disposal by gradually realizing classification collection and the transportation and treatment of urban garbage. In addition, the county will construct more recycling facilities to turn more garbage into usable resources.

The ecological improvement campaign will balance ecological conservation and energy exploitation to build separate ecological function areas and resource reserve areas. The focus will be on the ecological restoration of mines and the construction of a well-planned, functional and efficient ecological network featuring a pleasant environment.

By building environment protection model communities and model gardens, the model towns campaign will make the county more livable and lay a solid foundation for a harmonious and well-off society.
