Announcement ceremony for the new policy.
In a recent move, Shanxi province extended its discounts on tickets at popular tourist attractions, to the entire year, rather than just for the May Day holiday as a way to benefit its people and promote its tourism business, while reducing the reliance on ticket sales alone.

Tourists can now get a discount of 40 percent during the low season, at sights across the province and 20 percent during peak season. People aged 60 or older can get in free of charge. Also, for special tourism events, such as China Tourism Day (May 19) or World Tourism Day (Sept 27), there will be no entrance fee at the gate but some scenic spots inside may still charge.

The provincial tourism bureau held an announcement ceremony for the new policy, on May 15, at the Impression Pingao Shawa Theater, with Sheng Dianqing, deputy secretary-general of the province, Feng Jianping, head of the provincial tourism bureau, Wei Mingxi, Pingyao county’s Party secretary, and Cao Zhisheng, mayor of Pingao, on hand to celebrate.

The tourism bureau says it will hold follow-up meetings to tell local tourism departments and companies to be sure they follow the new changes and improve safety and services.
