Pingyao is in central Shanxi province and has a history of more than 2700 years. Legend says that it was the Yao emperor’s property. The old city of Pingyao covers a 1,260-square-meters area and has a population of 500,000. It is 90 kilometers from the city of Taiyuan, Shanxi’s capital, and 600 km from the city of Beijing. It has convenient transportation, thanks to the South Tongpu Railway line, Dagang Highway, Fentun Highway, State Road 108, and the Dongxia Railway line.

It is also the best-preserved town of its kind in China and has kept its original form from the Qing and Ming dynasties. It contains 11 cultural relics under national protection and seven under provincial protection and is a globally known historical city, with great heritage protection, and a place that is good for tourism, with its unique features and rich culture.

Many important national leaders have visited the site, including Hu Jintao, Jiang Zemin, and Zhu Rongji and the county has been the site for the Pingyao International Photo Exhibition, for 10 years running. This has been one of China’s Top Ten Most Influential Events, according to the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA).

It has also been recognized as one of China’s Top 10 scenic customer satisfaction cities, China's Top 50 must-visit places for foreigners, and an excellent Chinese destination. To turn itself into an international tourist destination, Pingyao has paid a lot of attention to environmental protection and development to perfect its infrastructure.

And Pingyao has seen rapid development and has 21 cultural heritage sites, six special streets, at least 200 shops, more than 10 places of entertainment, 130 inns, 21 travel agencies, and 600 guides. It established eight new industrialization-oriented parks, with Pingyao beef as a major product and, under the 12th Five-year Plan, it plans to develop its tourism and environment, with cultural tourism in mind, as a low-carbon economy innovation area, a modern agricultural demonstration county, and an all-round harmonious, livable area.

Pingyao is an open hometown, one of whose goal is win-win cooperation. The county government has issued a series of policies and implementation suggestions to encourage outside investment. Setting up an administrative government affairs service center, the government has made management public so that the administrative environment can be highly efficient and honest.
