Shuanglin Temple

Shuanglin Temple

The Shuanglin (Twin Trees) Temple was originally known as the Zhongdu Temple, which was built around AD 571, as suggested by the inscriptions on the oldest stone tablet there. It was a place of great interest when it was the Zhongdu, with throngs of worshipers and other people coming to see the magnificent buildings and burn incense and pay respect to the Buddhist gods.

It was probably during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) that it gained its current name, thanks to a legend about Sakyamuni’s death, which said that the Sakyamuni Buddha died under twin sala trees, by the Ajitavati River, in the city of Kushinagar, India.
