Pingyao Stage Theater

Pingyao Stage Theater, as well-known as the Moulin Rouge in France, is located near the Nine-Dragon Screen in the ancient town. It is surrounded by the Confucian Temple, the Temple of the God of Wealth, Kuixing Tower and the Ancient City Wall. Founded in 1703 AD (the 42nd year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911) and originally named the Centre of Rites and Music, the tower used to be a hospitality hall for government officials, recreation place for merchants, and performance hall for banquets and dances.

The theater park consists of a Nine-Dragon Screen, Opera Corridor, Opera Hall, Bar Area and Guest Houses. It has grown into a comprehensive performance centre, featuring northern banquet dances, traditional opera shows, special snacks, modern facilities and cultural communication. A number of operas are on display every day including singing performance, song and dance duet, and yangko dance, a traditional dance in central Shanxi.
