North China's Shanxi province posted 9.1 percent growth in its gross domestic product in 2021, with GDP worth 2.26 trillion yuan ($356.88 billion), according to the annual report issued by the Shanxi Statistics Bureau.

The secondary industry played a prominent role in driving economic growth last year, with 10.2 percent growth in added value, followed by 8.3 percent growth by the tertiary industry and 8.1 percent growth by the primary industry.

The province's general public budget expenditure came in at 504.81 billion yuan, a decrease of 1.2 percent.

Annual investment in fixed assets rose 8.7 percent year-on-year, 3.8 percentage points higher than the national average.

Retail sales of consumer goods totaled 774.73 billion yuan, up 14.8 percent year-on-year. The province's consumer prices rose 1.0 percent from 2020.

According to the statistics issued by the bureau, 506,000 people were newly employed in the province's urban areas.

The per capita disposable income of urban residents totaled 37,433 yuan, an increase of 7.6 percent, while that of rural residents was 15,308 yuan, up 10.3 percent.


The province's grain output in 2021 was 14.21 billion kilograms, down 0.2 percent year-on-year and the total production of pork, beef, mutton and poultry was 1.34 million metric tons, up 32.3 percent year-on-year.


The added value of industrial enterprises above a designated size – those with annual sales revenue of 20 million yuan or more – increased 12.7 percent compared with 2020. 

Among its leading sectors, the high-tech manufacturing industry increased by 34.2 percent year-on-year in terms of added value, while the strategic emerging industry increased by 19.5 percent in added value. 

Revenue generated by industrial enterprises above a designated size hit 2.88 trillion yuan from January to November in 2021, up 49.7 percent year-on-year, while profits increased to 305.58 billion yuan, reaching a new high.


The value of Shanxi's foreign trade in 2021 was 223.03 billion yuan, increasing 48.3 percent year-on-year. Imports were worth 86.43 billion yuan, up 37.1 percent, and exports totaled 136.59 billion yuan, up 56.3 percent.

There were 115 newly registered foreign-funded enterprises in Shanxi between January to November, a year-on-year increase of 17.4 percent, while the actual utilization of foreign capital grew 16.3 percent year-on-year to $240 million.

Foreign direct investment undertaken by Shanxi businesses from January to November increased 41.1 percent year-on-year to $230 million. Meanwhile, the turnover of foreign-contract projects reached $1.42 billion, up 3.5 percent year-on-year.


Last year, Shanxi's coal, electricity and gas production all hit records.

The raw coal output of local coal producers above a designated size increased 10.5 percent to 1.19 billion tons, while coal-derived gas output was 9.41 billion cubic meters, up 15.6 percent.

The province's installed power generation capacity last year reached 373.44 billion kilowatts-hours, an increase of 8.9 percent year-on-year.

Throughout 2021, Shanxi transmitted 123.47 billion kWh of electricity to other regions in China, an increase of 17.2 percent year-on-year.
