North China's Shanxi province has used funds of over 25 million yuan ($3.57 million) from the central government since 2019 to protect and restore subalpine meadows and grasslands covering more than 20 square kilometers, according to local officials.

They said the funds were mainly deployed in subalpine meadows and grasslands over 2,000 meters above sea level in Shanxi.

Subalpine meadows and grasslands cover an area of more than 3,333 square kilometers in Shanxi, accounting for about 12.5 percent of the province's total grassland area.

Officials said that due to natural influences and human activity, the subalpine meadows and grasslands in Shanxi has been seriously damaged over the past few years.

Through environmental and ecological protection and remedial treatment, Shanxi will restore the subalpine meadows and grasslands to their original appearance and develop them into eco-sightseeing areas.
