The provincial government recently held a meeting on promoting and sustaining the continuous improvement of air quality in North China's Shanxi province.

Tasks in five key areas including optimizing industrial structures, air pollution controls and clean heating, were identified at the meeting.

According to the priorities established, Shanxi will make renewed progress in its industrial transformation and upgrading by cutting down production overcapacity in the coking industry, increase its ultra-low emissions in the steel industry, as well as tackle and guide companies that cause pollution.

Officials said the province will implement summer air pollution prevention and control actions -- especially treatment and control of the ozone, volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxide pollutants -- to realize progress in coordinating the prevention and control of the ozone and reducing the average density of PM2.5 pollution.

To increase the control of pollution from diesel trucks, Shanxi will expedite the removal of medium and heavy-duty diesel trucks with National III emission standards and below and strengthen vehicle fuel quality supervision.

In addition, it will accelerate coverage of its heating service that uses clean energy, eliminate the burning of bulk coal and carry out dust treatment at construction sites and on roads so as to reduce dust pollution.
