Floating castles are generally the stuff of Disney movies and fairytales, except in three villages in Shanxi province where they are a reality.

Immersed in stunning forest, Wanghuagou, Wuhuashan and Caojialiang lie in the Guancen Mountains in Ningwu county, and are built on cliffs standing hundreds of meters high. Most houses in the villages have a history dating back some 200 years and are made of stone and wood.

The only roads to the villages are narrow footpaths paved with round logs winding over the cliffs. The major mode of transport for villagers is by mule or on horseback, which also help carry the necessities of life.

Villagers live on naked oats, potatoes and wheat. Springs flowing down from the cliffs are the major source of water for the villagers.

Tourism development in recent years has transformed the traditional lifestyles of local residents. In 2014, the government of Ningwu county built roads into the Guancen Mountains and constructed water pipelines for Wanghuagou village. The unique architectural style as well as farm stays and inns provided by local villagers draw many visitors each summer and fall.
